Balance

How do we balance time to serve others and taking care of our selves? Sometimes in life I feel like I don't do enough service. I want to learn to be able to have a balance of serving others and taking care of myself. I sometimes feel like I am selfish because I don't serve people often enough. What are some suggestions that people have as to how to better balance things?

Life often feels out of balance to me too. I like to remember Elder Dallin H. Oaks talk about "Good, Better, Best." It helps me prioritize what I should be doing. Also Elder M. Russel Ballard's talk "O Be wise." is a good one. You can go to lds.org and search for the titles to find the talks.

I do know that when I'm feeling down serving others does help me feel better.

I've had the same problem, sometimes I forget to take care of myself because I'm helping other people so much. Just remember to always read your scriptures and pray for guidance. Heavenly Father knows what that "happy medium" is.

You know there is such a thing as when your sitting on the couch on a friday night bored simply going and hanging out with someone you know of who might be alone. Like a neighbor, friend or whatever...or even someone who might have bad roommates or something like that. Because I've done that before and when I thought that it was probably wierd to suddenly show up at that person's apartment I actually found out that they were bored and wanted to do something, so it actually helped them out alot.

Words of Wisdom

The effect of our words and acts is tremendous in this world. Every moment of life you are changing to a degree the lives of the whole world. … So, it’s not the surroundings, it isn’t the positions; the thing that will influence [others] in this world, are personalities. No matter what you are people will feel and recognize this. You radiate, you can’t hide it. You may pretend something else, but that will not affect people.
